Camp Joy Is Here

"Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us." Ephesians 5:1-2

As you are coming to Joy during the week, especially in the morning, please be on the lookout for our campers!  They maybe headed outside to play or do an activity and they probably won't be looking out for you.

When picking up your children from Camp Joy, please remain in your car and they will be escorted to you.

Remember to wear play clothes and close-toed shoes for outside playing.

Keepers of the Command

"...we obey his commandments and do what pleases him." 1 John 3:22

Vacations are being planned and many of us are headed to adventures unknown.
Be sure to remember to plan for your offerings and tithes to the church.  Just because there is no Sunday School going on, and because you're out of town, doesn't mean we turn off the lights and stay home, too.  There are still hungry souls to be fed and the power remains on.

Have you noticed changes in our culture and in the church?  People are living their lives differently than before.  Congregations are not sustaining themselves as they once did.  Change is difficult and hard.  If you love the Church, please take the opportunity to explore these changes and discover with others how God might be doing a new thing.  The Shift, a book by Mark Tidsworth, describes the struggle of the church and the move to a new paradigm that can help congregations grow stronger and healthier. When Faith Formation and Sunday School classes begin in the fall, we will read this book chapter by chapter as part of a discussion group.  Groups will meet Sunday mornings at 9:30am starting August, 20th, as well as a Tuesday evening group starting August 29th.  The cost of the book is $10.  Please sign up and pay for your book by July 31.

Wise Walk

"Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise."  Proverbs 13:20

The Youth are beginning a fundraiser for the 2018 National Youth Gathering in Houston, TX. In the Gathering Area there are envelopes that are numbered from 1 to 144.  To help with this fundraiser select an envelope, and the number on the envelope is your donation amount. There are no catalogs to look through, nothing to order and nothing to fret over.  If you would like to join with a friend or two for higher envelope numbers just imagine what you can do together to help our youth.  Take your envelope home and once you have reached your goal amount bring it back to the church and place it in the collection box located in the staff office hallway. The envelopes and donations will be due August 20th.  Please help our youth get to Houston with this easy and fun fundraising event.

Hand and Foot Canasta will be played Friday, July 7, 6:30 at the home of Avery and Jackie Taylor.  Please RSVP to Jackie if you would like to join in the evening's fun.

LinC Families will enjoy an afternoon pool party at the home of Josh and Melissa Falk, Saturday, July 8, at 3:00.  This is a family friendly event. Contact Melissa or Jillian Cox for more information.

Come and relax with the group coloring together, Wednesday, July 12, at 1:00.

Watch for announcements regarding July gatherings for GIFT Ladies, LinC Ladies and BBT.

Opportunities for Women of Joy

There will be a couple of Women's Retreats coming up and all women of Joy are invited to join in.

October 14, a one night stay at Camp Kinard Retreat Center.  This is a lovely camp in the woods not far from Columbia.  We will leave Joy on Saturday morning and return Sunday afternoon after a beautiful church service by the lake.  While at Camp Kinard, we will have structured time with Bible study led by two very wonderful profession Lutheran women, enjoy free time, exercise time, crafts, fun and of course good food and snacks.  Saturday night we will go to Sealy's Restaurant for a great buffet costing about $12 a person all-inclusive of drink and desserts.  The retreat is $70 per person, based on double occupancy for a two double bed room with a private bath.

The second retreat will be March 22-25 at Isle of Palms Retreat Center..There are rooms with 2 double bead and some with one queen and bunks.  The cost of this retreat will be $125 per person based on double occupancy for the three nights. Rates can be adjusted for less than three nights.   This is a non-structured retreat.  There will be a list of fun places to go and things to do near Isle of Palms and Charleston and also a restaurant list for those who have never been before.  A meal will be provided on Saturday night at the Retreat Center for those wishing to eat in and then do a service project together.  No other activities or meals will be planned for the whole group; all other meals will be on your own.  A deposit of $75 will hold your space for this retreat.

Please contact Jackie Taylor 864-439-2817 or Sharlene Teichmann 864-486-8420 for more information about either of these retreats.

Covered By Love

"...maintain constant love for one another..." 1 Peter 4:8

SpIHN is Returning to Joy!

SpIHN is a temporary homeless shelter program serving homeless families with children under the age of 18.  SpIHN's shelter model is unique in the fact that our families are sheltered at night in Spartanburg churches.  The volunteers from the churches prepare and serve dinner, convert the Sunday School classrooms into separate family sleeping rooms--to keep the families intact, and serve breakfast the next morning to the families.

In addition to setting up sleeping space, and preparing, serving and cleaning up after the supper meal, volunteers are needed to serve as evening hosts, and overnight hosts.  Evening hosts visit with the guests, help with homework, and be around as the host of Joy. The whole family can come and volunteer from 6:30-9pm.  Overnight hosts spend the night at Joy and are here from 8:30pm to 7am. Your family and children are welcome to come and stay and sleep on provided beds just like the ones our guests use.  The overnight hosts include both a male and female and can be husband and wife or two separate hosts.

SpIHN's mission is to help homeless families and their children become self-sufficient. SpIHN employees a case manager and director who work with the families to help them identify resources available and to train them in daily life skills to help them break the cycle of homelessness.

SpIHN will be our guests July 23-30.  For more information or to help answer questions, contact EP Martin.  The SpIHN volunteer sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the hallway.
