Deacon Shelly Allen

I am thrilled to be a part of the ministry here at Joy as the Director of Family Life.  The journey is just beginning and I look forward to seeing how God continues to work in this community.

I was baptized in the Lutheran church and I have been involved with church in some way, shape or form since I can remember.  I am originally from Illinois, but I grew up in Florida.  For college I traveled to Hickory, NC to attend Lenoir-Rhyne College, now University and I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education.  From there I attended Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and received my Master of Arts in Religion with a concentration in Christian Education.

On August 4, 2002 I was commissioned and installed as an Associate in Ministry at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, FL.  It was wonderful to go back and serve in my home synod.

I met my husband, Drew in Jacksonville and we were married in July of 2005.  Drew is a graduate of Georgia Tech and is a Civil Engineer.  He currently works for Thomas & Hutton Engineering in Greenville, SC.

Following my time at St. Mark’s I was called to Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary as the Associate Director of Admission and Project Connect Coordinator.  Throughout my time at the seminary I also served in the Contextual Education Office.  I thoroughly enjoyed working with students and congregations to set up their field placements, CPE, and internships.  This was a great experience to see how the future leaders of the church had been lifted up, shaped and formed to serve the larger church.

Our oldest son, Riley was born in June 2008.  Shortly after that in the spring of 2009 the company my husband worked for opened up an office in Greenville, SC and we relocated to Fountain Inn, SC.  It was a great move for our family and we have enjoyed being in the Upstate.  In June 2009 I was called to serve at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Simpsonville, SC as the Director of Children’s Ministry.

Our family grew in February 2010 when Cody was born and then again in July 2012 when Avery was born.    In January of 2013, I was named the Interim Director of Holy Cross Academy Child Development Center.  Not long after that ‘interim’ was dropped from my title and I served in that capacity until December 2016.   I never imagined that I would serve in that roll.  It was a pleasure watching the little ones grow and it was a great learning experience.

Our family enjoys playing and watching sports.  We love music and regularly attend concerts and festivals.
